Online Compliment Scams: Why You Should Never Send Money Upfront
While surfing the web, you may occasionally come across someone who seems very friendly and flattering. They might tell you how handsome, kind, or wonderful you are, even though you have just started chatting. Soon after, the conversation takes a turn when they ask you to send them money—often around $100—for something like verification, transportation, or another small “favor.”
This is a common online scam used on classified sites and dating platforms. Scammers rely on compliments and quick emotional connections to gain your trust. Once they feel you are comfortable, they request a small payment, hoping you will send it without thinking too much about it.
Unfortunately, once the money is sent, the person usually disappears. Their account may be deleted, messages stop, and you will likely never hear from them again. This tactic is known as a “money upfront” scam, and it is designed to take advantage of people who are simply trying to make a connection online.
The best rule to follow is simple: never send money to someone you have only met online. If a stranger asks for money early in a conversation, treat it as a clear warning sign and stop communicating immediately.
